Case Study: Washington Square Films

CUSTOMER UPDATE:

“The awards campaign was a success [at Cannes] — 3 Silver Lions + 2 Bronze Lions + shortlisted in 13 other categories — which is the most PepsiCo snacks division has ever received for a spot!”

“Once we reached post-production, within days of providing our original video assets & alternate audio takes, we had all of the variations we needed to splice into our original edit, and had deliverables for each of the local brand names ready for our client to ship to their various markets around the world.”

Generated from the Localized “Walkers” Version

Lay's achieved a cost-effective solution for their Walker's brand by using the original ad footage from the live sporting event in combination with LipDub AI technology. This allowed them to create a localized version for a new market without reshooting the commercial or incurring expensive editing costs.

Months of time saved by foregoing traditional VFX

“We’re very excited to imagine how much more streamlined the process will be once it’s worked into every editor + VFX artist’s personal workflows.“

Problem

Washington Square Films had a high-pressure timeline to create several local versions of a high-stakes advertisement featuring A list talent.

For this campaign, reshooting was not an option because the commercial was shot at a live sporting event, meaning there was only one opportunity for production to record the necessary footage. That left dubbing as the only viable option.

Normally, in situations where A-list talent was being dubbed, WSF would leverage expensive and costly VFX animation to try and get passable lip sync. But in this case, there were time and cost constraints, and moreover the client was worried about the localized performances’ believability, and the dreaded uncanny valley that can occur with traditional CG, especially given notoriety of the talent.

“We needed a creative and flexible solution that could suit our budget and demanding post-production schedule.”

Solution

WSF required a creative and flexible lip-syncing solution that could meet their budgetary constraints and demanding post-production timeline for dubbing the commercial into multiple languages, as well as deliver results that surpassed the uncanny valley

After doing diligence on a number of AI-based lip-syncing solutions, WSF discovered LipDub AI, and were impressed first and foremost by the quality, which in their view far surpassed what they had seen from traditional VFX. And they were equally impressed by its speed and the ultra affordable price point relative to VFX.

“In the very recent past, this would have required a team of VFX animators painstakingly building models and replacing mouth movements by hand, eating up time & money, but we were fortunate to have found LipDub AI in our preparation stage before the shoot, so knew we had something cutting edge to fall back on instead.”

Results

Using LipDub AI, WSF received multiple localized versions of the commercial within days of providing the original footage and audio takes, meeting their demanding post-production deadlines.

LipDub AI enabled the creation of localized versions for various brands without reshooting footage or relying on traditional VFX lip syncing methods.
